Description

Putting the customer at the top of the priority list is one thing; effectively gearing a supply chain in line with the customer is another. More than 58% of the supply chain managers surveyed in the Capgemini's Supply Chain Agenda 2010 research said that their main business driver for 2010 is meeting changing customer requirements. However, customer focus can mean many things and one example is seen in the laptop hardware industry. A few years ago, assemble-to-order supply chains and pure direct distribution channels were considered to be the leading supply chain model. Today, low-cost competition is beating these higher cost models in some markets with a streamlined make-to-stock model at the lowest possible cost base. New indirect channels, like supermarkets, now also sell laptops. What customer focus truly means must be based on the voice of the customer. Freedom to buy a personally-configured laptop or to buy one off-the-shelf at the lowest price in the supermarket is something that the customer decides. A clear trend in improving customer focus is to move to a channel-based supply chain. Where business unit and geographic boundaries have limited the optimization potential in many cases, new channel-based operating models are introduced. The essence of this approach is that customer requirements and distribution models drive the design of a supply chain, rather than the internal organizational structure or product characteristics.
